UTKALMANI GOPABANDHU DAS

Introduction:-  Gopabandhu Das was widely known as Utkalmani. He was the great hero of Orissa. He was the best friend of the poor.
Gopabandhu was born on 9th October 1877. His native place was Suando, a village in the district of Puri. His father was Daitary Das and his mother was Swarnamayee Devi. His mother died when he was a baby. He was brought-up by his aunty Kamala Devi. His father appointed a home tutor to teach him Oriya language.
Parantage and childhood:-  Daitary Das a very conscious person. He established a primary school in his village to admit his son. Gopabandhu married to Moti Devi in his early youth. After completion of his primary education he was admitted in Rupadeipur Middle School. Afterwards Gopabandhu was sent to Puri Zilla School. He was very much influenced by his guide and philosopher Rama Chandra who was his care taker. His heart was simmering with patriotic feeling. He formed the 'Puri Seva Samiti' with the help of his friends and served the society in many ways. He wrote many patriotic poems.
Education:-  In 1899 Gopabandhu passed the Entrance Examination and went to Cuttack for higher education in Ravenshaw College. He established the 'Kartavya Bodhini Samiti' to save our mother tongue 'Oriya'. After his B.A. he studied law at Kolkata and organized the Oriya coolies there. He fought for their rights.
Work:-  He began to practice law but could not continue as he was a great lover of truth and non-violence. He established an ideal Vana Vidyalaya at Satyabadi. He was very close to Mr. Madhusudan Das. He was elected as the member of Bihar-Orissa Legislative Council. He fought for the Oriya people in Singhbhum. 
Service to Mankind:- He published a monthly magazine named 'Satyabadi'. He was the founder of the largest circulated Oriya daily the 'SAMAJ'. He wrote many poems, essays. Avakash Chinta, Kara Kabita, Bandira Atmakatha, Dharmapada. Gomahatmya, Nachiketa Upakhyan etc are his contributions to Oriya literature.
Conclusion:-  He died on 17th June 1928. He was respected as the Utkalmani. He will be ever remembered as a great friend of the poor.
