English Essay THE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM
THE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM Essay
Introduction
Now-a-days India is facing a lot of problems. One of them is the problem of unemployment. The problem is increasing very quickly. It is a serious problem. The problem of unemployment is the mother of naxalism, extortion, maoism and such other anti-social activities.
What is unemployment
The meaning of unemployment is the lack of a job for those persons who are seeking work. There are two types of unemployed: (i) educated, (ii) uneducated'. Unemployment among the educated is increasing very fast. The uneducated get some work somehow. The educated people are taught to do sophisticated work. They don't want to work with ordinary labourers who are illiterate. So a number of people are becoming burdens upon their families as they have no work to do.
What is under-employment
Under-employment is insufficient employment. When a graduate is forced to do the job of a matriculate, he is under-employed. Some graduates try to earn a livelihood through tuition. But they don't get enough tuition. Their time is not fully utilized. This is under-employment, Usually our farmers don't work for the whole year. They are also under-employed.
Reasons of unemployment
There are several reasons for unemployment. The first is rapid population growth. Our country is unable to provide decent jobs to so many people. Secondly our cottage industries are nearly destroyed due to the establishment of big factories. The products of cottage industries are not saleable now-a-days. So the village artisans are without jobs. Thirdly, the abolition of the caste system is also one of the causes of unemployment. In ancient times there was division of labour among different castes. The descendants of a particular caste used to do the profession of their family. They didn't have to seek employment. When the Govt. assumed the role of job-provider, the social fabric was destroyed. This resulted in large scale unemployment. Fourthly, our system of education is defective. It produces clerks who hate manual labour. so they become unemployed if they don't find any official work. Fifthly, computerisation is also creating unemployment. One computer is able to do the work of several persons. So one computer operator is gobbling up the jobs of many people.
Measures to solve the problem
Careful planning is required to solve the problem of unemployment. The outlook of young boys and girls ought to be changed. The education system should be thoroughly revamped. Emphasis must be given on vocational education. Cottage industries should be revised. The villagers are to be given incentives to carry on their family trade. Large factories should be discouraged. Small scale industries must be financed. The computerisation process should be slowed down.
Steps to be taken by the govt.
The Govt. must take proper steps to solve the unemployment problem. Technical and vocational education must start from school level. Globalisation must stop. The exodus from villages to towns must also stop. Cottage industries and the agricultural sector must be given priority. Mixed farming must be promoted. The private sector must be given sufficient freedom to expand. Any restriction on the Private sector must be lifted. Unemployment and under-employment lead to social unrest. This must always be kept in mind.
