A VISIT TO A PLACE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Introduction:-  There are many historical places in Orissa. The Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills are very important. They are very close to each other. They are situated about two kilometers away from Bhubaneswar the capital city of Orissa. The places are on the way from Bhubaneswar to Khurdha.
Name and Situation of the place:-  During the pre-Christian era Jain ascetics used to live in the caves in these hills. The caves were made by the famous Oriya King Mahameghabahan Air Kharavel. He ruled in the 2nd century B.C. According to historical reports it is said that the sacred bones of Mahavir Jin were buried on the Udayagiri hilis. The temple of Rishavanath is on the top of the hill. A ground image of Parswanath has been placed near the temple.

Historical significance:-  Thad a chance to visit these historical places during my stay at Bhubaneswar. I went there with my cousin brother by a two wheeler. We saw that the Khandagiri hill is taller than the Udayagiri. There are 19 caves on it. The edicts of Kharvel have been carved out on the walls of the caves. We saw the Hathee Gumpha, Bagha Gumpha, Rani Gumpha and Saragpuri. Saragpuri and Ranigumpha are two sotreyed. We also saw many beautiful stone images on the walls of the caves.
Description:-  The Hathee Gumpha is very important because the detailed records of king Kharavel's reign have been carved on the walls of this gumpha in Pali language. It is the only stone inscription in India. The ancient glory of Orissa is known from these inscriptions.
Conclusion:-  A small market has been set up on the foot of the hills. There are shops of many kinds to attract the visitors. There are hotels, snack bars and restaurants. We bought some stone images, took slight tiffin and came back to Bhubaneswar.
