A GREAT HISTORICAL PERSONALITY

(Introduction, Life sketch, Character and deeds, Conclusion)
We read about many kings and emperors whose names have been recorded in history in letters of gold. They saw us the path of virtue and set good examples before others. They have conquered death by their noble works. People remember them with love and respect. Among them Ashok is the most outstanding character. As a Buddhist monarch of India he revised the land to the summit of glory. He could bring about a revolution in the duty of a king towards his subject.
Ashok was the son of Bindusar and the grandson of Chandragupta Mourya, the founder of Mouryan Empire in India. Some say that he was very rowdy and violent in his early life and ascended the throne killing his nintynine brothers. There are no historical proof to back these hearsays. Eight years after his coronation he set out a campaign for the conquest of Kalinga. He conqured Kalinga after a mighty battle in which lacs of people were slain and a large number of people died of hunger. He felt a deep remorse for having conquered Kalinga with intensive and extensive cruelty. He resolved never to make a war again. He realised that true conquest is the conquest of man's heart by love and non-violence. Truth is the path of life. Kalinga war turned his life style.
Ashok was converted to Buddhism. He devoted himself to the task of spreading Buddhism among his subjects. He set up a lot of rock-edicts in different places for the people to read and to follow. In all those edicts
Ashok speaks of himself as the father of his people. He inscribed his edicts and the teachings of Buddha in many rocks and stone pillars. He sent Buddhist missions to China, Ceylone, Europe, Africa to preach the Buddhist religion.
He was a kind and benevolent ruler and established a strong and efficient government. He made himself accessible to his subject night and day to hear complaints of grievance. He abolished the cruel sports and animal sacrifice. Being an ardent Buddhist he was tolerant to all religious. He built many wells, roads, public gardens, hospitals for both men and animals. Monasteries were built. Big Universities grew up during his reign. Ashok was the only conqueror in the world who gave up war fare.
Ashok is an ideal to be followed by any Government. His Dharma Chakra has found place on the National Flag of India. He was the greatest historical personality having no parallel even before and after his time.
