Festivals are an important part of Indian Society. People celebrate them together with much pomp and joy. Different festivals are celebrated by different religious groups. Hindus observe so many festivals in different regions. Each and every festival has its own significance. There are many stories, epics about various festivals.
The Durga Puja, Ramlila, Dushera, Diwali, Holi, Ratha Yatra, Saraswati Puja, Ganesh Puja, Mahavishub, Shivratri, Janmastami are some of Hindu festivals. The Durga Puja is celebrated mostly in Bengal and Orissa. Ramlila is a festival of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The Dushera is observed in the northern and western provinces, Holi and Diwali are observed all over India. People worship the goddess of wealth Laxmi and Kali.
Houses are illuminated with lamps and candles. In Holi, people become happy embracing each other with colours.
The muslims observe their festivals like Id-ul-fittar, Id-zuha, Ramzan, Moharrum, Fatiha-duaz etc. The fast during Id-zuha and Id-ul-fittar. The Ramzan is a festival of self dinial.
The Christians of India celebrate their Christmas, the Good Friday. Shikhs observe the birthday of Guru Nanak with much pomp. The Jains and Buddhists celebrate their saints birthday. The santals and other adivasis observe many festivals like Saleipuja, Maghei, Karma, Nabarnna and new harvest.
People of India observe the Independence day, the Republic day as National festivals. They also observe Gandhi Jayanti, Children's day, birthdays of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi with respect.
Festivals bring about social unity and communal harmony. They give pleasure and amuzement.
