FAMINE
(Introduction, Cause, Description, Relief measures & Conclusion)
Due
to failure of crops famine occurs. It means actuate scarcity of food. It breaks
out when the crops are destroyed by flood, cyclone or earthquake. Sometimes it
follows a great war or revolution. It occurs in a particular region. People do not
get food to eat. Most people die of starvation. The sell their everything even
wives and children for a handful of rice. Some eat the leaves of trees, Dead
bodies are seen rotting every where. It is a horrible sight to see people dying
all around. Gold and silver lose their value. The hungry people became thieves
and robbers. People move about in rags with begging bowls in hands. Their
bodies become emaciated, eyes and cheeks sunken.
Famines
are found in every age in our history. The Bengal famines of 1770 and 1943, the
Orissa famine of 1866 and the Gujrat famine of 1900 are some of notable
examples.
The
government gives relief to the famine stricken people. Free medicines,
food-grains, other necessary things are distributed among the people, patriots
and N.G.O.s are active to about the sufferings of the people. Now famine can be
controlled within a short period. Dams have been constructed across rivers.
Govt. collects and stores food-grains at the time of harvest.
