RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF A CITIZEN

          Every independent country has its own constitution. Every member of a state is a citizen of that state. A citizen is a person who enjoys full rights either by birth or by being granted such rights. Every citizen has some rights as well as duties. The state gives him certain privileges for his personal interest. In return he must furnish some duties.
The rights of a citizen include many things. In our country we are enjoying seven kinds of fundamentals rights.
1. Right to equality- It guarantees equality of opportunity to all in public employments, without discrimination of religion, rare, sex or place of birth.
2. Right to freedom- It guarantees freedom of speech, peaceful assembly, formation of associations and unions, free movement in India, freedom of inhabitation any where in India, freedom of acquiring holding and disposing of properties and freedom of practicing any trade or profession.
3. Right against exploitation-Forced labour and traffic in human beings are prohibited.
4. Right of freedom of Religion- Freedom religion is guaranteed subject to provisions for health morality, peace and order.
5. Cultural and educational rights- Linguistic, cultural and religious interests of the minorities are protected. They can establish and administer their ducational institutions.
6. Right to property- No person can be unlawfully deprived of his movable and immovable property.
7. Right to constitutional remedies- Any citizen can move the Supreme Court of India for the enforcement of his fundamental rights.
These rights are guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Any act of the legislature which affects these fundamental rights can be challenged in the court of law.
An ideal citizen must remember his duties to the state. Some important duties of a citizen are given below.
(1) He should be loyal to his country. He should think of the interests of the country first and then of his own interest.
(2) He might be prepared to fight for its defense
(3) He must obey the laws of the state. He must pay the taxes.
(4) He must not do anything which may cause any in convenience to others.
(5) He should be willing to give voluntary social service and help his neighbors. He should have patriotism and fellow feeling. -
An ideal citizen in an asset to a country. A state with all such citizens is truly an ideal one.
