The Dola yatra or holi is a famous festival of Hindus. It is celebrated all over the country with much rejoicing. It falls in the month of Falgun. It is a festival of colours.
Like other festivals the Dola yatra has mythological background.
It is said that Krishna killed the ogress Putana. As per another legend people celebrate the death of Holika, what ever it may be the festival is celebrated to mark the union of Radha and Krishna. People arry the images of Radha and Krishna is decorated 'Biman' and move from door to door. They worship Radha-Krishna with other deities on a common ground of meeting. It is called the 'Melan'. The place is crowded with people. On this occasion fairs are arranged every where. People enjoy the squirting of coloured water and smearing of coloured powder which is called as Abhira. All are happy and joyous.
All schools, colleges and government offices remain closed on account of Holi. This festival becomes more enjoyable as it falls in the Spring season. The earth looks lovely with various flowers at attractive fragrance.
The sweet smell of mango bloosoms fill the atmosphere. The cuckoo
sings very sweet songs. This festival is celebrated in the country side with
much pomp and show. We can see processions, rejoicings and cultural shows in many places.
Though holi is a festival of love and rejoicing yet sometimes communal riot breaks out and many people are killed. Hence all should forget their enmity and embrace each other in love.
