THE VILLAGE BARBER
(Introduction,
His name and work, His family, His financial condition,
Conclusion)
In
Indian villages people follow the trade of their respective castes. Now-a-days
many people forget their own trades. But the village barber earns his daily
bread performing his own traditional work.
Nitai
Barik is our village barber. He lives with his family in a small house. He
serves the village people. He cuts the hair and shaves the people. He knows how
to size the hair by cutting and clipping. He knows how to trim the beards and
moustaches. People get their hair cut by him and pay something. He has to do
some customary works during the wedding and funeral ceremony. His wife Sumi
does not sit idle at home. She has to do some professional works. She pares the
nails of the village ladies and paints their feet. She also does some customary
works at the time of wedding and funeral ceremony of the people.
Nitai goes round the village with his box for his job. He
maintains a saloon at the village chowk. He works there from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.
People come to his saloon to have their hair cut and shaving. In the morning
Nitai goes to the houses of people for hair cutting and shaving. He carries
scissors, shaving razors, shaving cream, after shave lotion or a piece of alum,
a small mirror, few combs and a plastic cup in his box.
His financial condition is not so sound. He takes a small amount
from the villagers. At the time of wedding and funeral he demands more for his
customary work. He is very simple, faithful and honest.
