THE MOHARRUM
(Introduction,
Background, Celebration, Conclusion)
The Moharrum is a famous festival of the Mohammedans. They
celebrate it all over the world with much pomp and rejoicings.
This festival has a historical background. Mohammed, the prophet
had two grandsons. They were Hassan and Hussain. Their enemy Yezid killed
Hassan and drove Hussain into an exile. After some time Hussain fought against Yezid. The cruel soldiers of Yezid surrounded Hussain for which he fought without taking any food for ten days and at last died.
In the memory of Hussain the Moharrum is celebrated for ten days.
During this period the Mohammedans fast and pray. They make Tazia which
represents the tomb over Hussains grave. The Tazia is decorated very nicely and
taken in a grand mourning procession. While some carry the Tazia others show
sham fight as a symbol of Hussains fighting with Yezid's soldiers. The
procession is the most important part of the festival. At the end the Tazia is
immersed and the Mohammedans break their fast.
The moharrum is celebrated only by the Shiah section of muslims.
They observe the festival to lament the tragic death of Hussain their first
Khalifa.
